Return from the Battle of Sakarya…

The Battle of Sakarya Square ended with the victory of the Turkish Armies, and Gazi is returning to Ankara. The people of Ankara, living in great anxiety and pessimism for twenty days, day and night, arranged a ceremonial welcome to the commander-in-chief of the army that defeated the enemy. Starting from the Ankara station, the government and council members, civil servants, students, shopkeepers and the public, lined up on both sides of the road towards the city, are advancing in a big procession by clapping as the veteran passes.

When he arrived in front of the parliament building, Gazi realized that those at the head of the regiment were on their way upwards. It turns out that this ceremony was organized as follows: “As a community”, they will go to the tomb of Hacı Bayram Veli, for this great victory that was won with the help of his “high spirituality”. prayers will be made, then speeches will be read by returning to the Assembly. Veteran:

“No such thing will happen, I will not lose the rights of the Mehmetçik, who defended the land of the country by shedding his blood and giving his life, to the saints! ” he says and turns straight to the parliament building. While describing this event years later, Atatürk added the following to his words:

“Some may have viewed my behavior as an unwarranted act that hurt the public’s belief; But I found it necessary to remind that the “spiritual” of the saints and the saints would not be the power to be trusted, especially in the defense of the country.”
